Southern Co. moves ahead on ‘clean coal'

But Atlanta-based Southern Co. is thinking ahead. This summer, the utility giant won permission from Mississippi regulators to build a large coal plant that can remove carbon gases produced when coal burns -- and do it while burning the cheapest kind of coal.

German Consul Elected Dean of Consular Corps

Vet convention to bring 9,000 to GWCC

Southeastern Bank earnings up
Erin Zureick reports that Southeastern Bank Financial Corp. reported higher quarterly earnings as the company continues to rebound from a sell-off of sour commercial property in 2009. The Augusta-based company reported second-quarter net income of $1.6 million, or 24 cents per share, compared to $637,000, or 10 cents per share, in the second quarter of 2009.

Staff reports that Georgia Northwestern Technical College President Craig McDaniel received a Kia “key to the future” during a special event held at the Kia Georgia Training Center in West Point, Ga., according to a press release. Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, Inc. donated 20 of the all-new Kia Sorentos to the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). The colleges receiving the cars were chosen based on the size of enrollment in their automotive programs.

Acworth bank closed by regulators
J. Scott Trubey reports that regulators on Friday seized NorthWest Bank & Trust, the 11th Georgia lender to fail in 2010. Acworth-based NorthWest was acquired by State Bank & Trust under a loss-share agreement with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. NorthWest’s branch in Acworth will reopen Saturday under the State Bank flag. A Marietta branch reopens Monday.

Macon bank taking over failed bank in Acworth
Linda S. Morris reports that a Macon-based bank has acquired an Acworth-based bank that was shut down Friday afternoon by federal and state regulators. State Bank & Trust Co. agreed to acquire the assets and deposits of NorthWest Bank & Trust of Acworth in a transaction handled by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., according to a news release.

Georgia-Pacific acquires Ala. pulp mills
Staff reports that Georgia-Pacific completed its deal to buy Parsons & Whittemore's Alabama River and Alabama Pine pulp mills in Perdue Hill, Ala., for an undisclosed amount. The deal includes the assets of the pulp mills, Alabama River Woodlands, the tall oil plant, the biodiesel plant, the chip mills at Elba and Jacksons Gap, Ala., and a pulpwood yard at Demopolis, Ala.

Union files for another election in Delta's merger
Kelly Yamanouchi reports that the International Association of Machinists submitted an application for another group of workers to hold a union representation election at Delta Air Lines as a result of it merger with Northwest Airlines. It marks another step toward resolving labor issues from the 2008 merger. The Machinists filed with the National Mediation Board for elections among about 700 stock clerks who handle maintenance parts.

Northwest to plead guilty to cargo price fixing
Staff reports that Northwest Airlines LLC, now part of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL), will plead guilty and pay a $38 million criminal fine for being part of a cargo price fixing scheme, the U.S. Department of Justice reported Friday. According to a one-count felony charge filed July 30 in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the now-defunct Northwest Airlines Cargo “was in a conspiracy to fix cargo rates charged to customers in the United States and elsewhere for international air cargo shipments from at least July 2004 until at least February 2006.” DOJ said.

Beacon system aims to aid in health records swap
Tom Corwin reports that Georgia doesn't yet have a system for hospitals and other health care providers to easily exchange electronic records, but it does have a slogan for that system: Better care anywhere. The general purpose is that we want the right information at the right place and the right time to serve every patient," said Ruth Carr, the state health information technology coordinator at the Georgia Department of Community Health. That was the impetus behind a $12 million grant proposal submitted by Medical College of Georgia but involving scores of other Augusta and regional providers, in addition to Emory University and Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

City's expenses top $3 million for airport contract lawsuit
Kelly Yamanouchi reports that the city of Atlanta's six-year legal battle over an airport advertising contract has cost the city about $3.5 million in legal fees so far and some are questioning whether the city should continue to rack up more charges by fighting the federal jury's $17.5 million judgment. Acting city attorney Peter Andrews said much of the city's $3.5 million in expenses came early on in the case and involved getting individuals removed from the suit.

Audit reviews airport use of federal stimulus funds
Kelly Yamanouchi reports that an audit by the Atlanta city auditor's office found that federal stimulus grants awarded to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport for its new international terminal under construction were generally managed properly. Hartsfield-Jackson received a $20 million federal grant for an international terminal baggage screening system and a $14 million federal grant for pavement in the international terminal's "apron" area around the terminal where aircraft are parked and refueled.

Memo points to deal between Medical Center, United Healthcare

Morris reports that while contract negotiations between The Medical Center of Central Georgia and United Healthcare are apparently not over, a memo was sent out to Macon area doctors this week saying an agreement had been reached. A contract dispute between the hospital and the insurance provider developed earlier this year over reimbursement payments.

Georgia firm recalls frozen reptile feed that may have Salmonella
David Markiewicz reports that MiceDirect, ofCleveland, Ga., has built a business selling frozen mice and rats online and shipping them to reptile owners whose exotic pets like them for dinner. This week, however, MiceDirect said it was voluntarily recalling some of its rodent feed because it could be contaminated with Salmonella, posing a health risk to humans handling the products.

Newnan native Connally is named Ga. Power senior production officer
Staff reports that Newnan native Stanley W. Connally Jr. was named Friday as Georgia Power's senior production officer, overseeing all the company's electric plants. As senior vice president and chief production officer he will have overall responsibility for Georgia Power's more than 14,000 megawatts of fossil and hydro generation and will report to Paul Bowers, the company's newly named chief operating officer. Connally has most recently served as plant manager at Alabama Power's Plant Barry.

Fieldale heir voted off board after a lawsuit
Stephen Gurr reports that Fieldale Farms officials are asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit brought by one of its largest shareholders, saying her claims are moot after she was voted off the board of directors. Betty Hatfield Goldberg of Gainesville, daughter of the late Fieldale co-founder Joe S. Hatfield, filed suit against the Baldwin-based poultry giant, claiming she was denied access to company records after she wanted to take a more active role in the company.
